Faces of Spotlight: Introducing Thomas Loosley

Posted by Aninda Henning on 04 Oct 2019

Meet our Auckland based NZ Sales Lead, Thomas Loosley. When he isn't leading and mentoring our NZ team, he's exploring the great outdoors with his family, playing board games, or reading comics. He's an avid Black Caps fan too and has been known to forgo sleep to watch test matches!

Go on, tell us a bit about yourself: I was born in Auckland but spent the majority of my early years in Russell (Bay of Islands). My family ended up moving back to Auckland so I could go to school and now I'm based here permanently.

I love traveling with my two year old son Oliver and my wife Linda. My other interests include cricket, hiking, board games and reading comic books.

To the best of my knowledge, my immediate family are the only Loosley’s in New Zealand, so if you come across any others, they'll be related to me! Embarrassingly, my last name ‘Loosley’ is an old Anglo-Saxon word that roughly translates to pig sty on the hill.

What do you do at Spotlight Reporting? I'm the NZ Sales Lead, so I take responsibility for the growth of the NZ market. A typical day for me consists of meetings with accountants and advisors to demonstrate the benefits and potential of Spotlight Reporting. There's a lot of collaboration with our team internally, ranging from Marketing, Finance, Support, Product, Developers and with those on the Leadership Team. I mentor our NZ Sales Team to ensure we continue our expansion in the territory.

"The best part about my job is when I hear the success stories from our subscribers. Success comes in many forms from those who’ve been able to engage more meaningfully with their clients because our reporting made it easier for them to understand the data, to those who’ve opened up a new revenue stream in advisory which has reinvigorated their passion for helping clients."

What attracted you to come and work for Spotlight Reporting and what were you doing beforehand? Spotlight has a great reputation as a leading SaaS company and the number 1 reporting and forecasting app in the Xero ecosystem, which felt like a natural progression to me from my previous role with Xero. I was given the opportunity to lead the NZ Sales Team and could do that while drawing on my existing network of accountants and advisors who would benefit from using Spotlight Reporting. It was an exciting opportunity and I haven't looked back since after joining the company three years ago.

Tell us about your most memorable moment at Spotlight Reporting. My favourite experience was hands down, at a Xerocon a couple of years ago when a new subscriber ran up and gave me a hug. After brushing off the initial shock, she told me how meeting with me recently and subscribing to Spotlight Reporting had been the inspiration she needed to stay in the accounting profession. She was actually thinking about leaving because she was so run down by doing nothing but compliance work. After I signed her up, she had agreement from six clients to meet more regularly and was helping them overcoming challenges and goal setting. She was super excited to roll Spotlight out with more of her client base!
